The inspiration behind this website: My 1991 Mazda Miata BRG. Before this I owned a 1995 Honda Civic Hatchback. However, that car was hit while parked and ended up being totaled. After trying to buy another civic for a while with no luck, I decided to branch out and begin looking for a Miata. That was the best decision I have ever made in the automotive world. It really is true: Miata Is Always The Answer.
This car is a limited production with only 3900 being produced in the British Racing Green color during 1991. It comes equipped with a 1.6l making 116hp and 100 ft/lb of torque. Not much power but plenty to have a good time taking into consideration that the car weighs close to 2100 pounds. This Miata still has the matching OEM fiberglass hardtop which I believe to be essential for any Miata owner.
As for aftermarket upgrades this car has a few parts that make it much more enjoyable to drive:
- Jackson Racing Cold Air Intake
- Racing Beat Catback Exhaust
- GAB Front Strut Bar
- Larger Front And Rear Strut Bars
- Rokkor Coil Overs
- Rota MSR Wheels (15×6.5)
- Hankook Ventus V2 Tires
- R Package Front Lip
- Depo Smoked Front Turn Signals (Not really a mod but might as well.)
The exhaust and intake do give a pretty small boost in power to the car but the best part of them is the sound. Having these two together makes the car feel a lot faster and much more exciting to drive. For suspension, the Raceland coilovers are not the best choice. They were very affordable and the stock suspension on the car was blown out. I decided to take the risk and try them out. Looking back I would have spent a little extra money to get a better product such as Flyin Miata’s Vmaxx coil overs.
I daily drive this car and live in Southern California where there is plenty of twisty roads to enjoy. The car makes driving to and from work a good time, racing from stop light to stop light without breaking the speed limit is just enough fun to put a smile on your face. On the weekends going to roads like Ortega Highway brings a whole new level of excitement for the car. With a good driver behind the car carrying the momentum through the turns, this Miata can keep up with some surprising cars. For the money, I do not think I could have purchased a more exciting car that maintains a good level of reliability.
The car is a blast in the current stage. However, some more modifications could definitely add something. First of all, the Rokkor Coilovers are not great whatsoever I plan to upgrade. The dream being Ohlins but realistically I may end up going for some Flyin Miata Vmaxx’s as they are affordable and perform well from what I have heard. Next, the wheels on this car are replicas, they came with the car and I do not truly like the style. The discussion of real vs replica can be left for another post, but when I buy another set it will for sure be a real set of wheels. I am looking for either a set of 14×7 Enkei RPF1’s or 15×8 Enkei RPF1’s. The 14×7 provide a vintage 90’s styling but the tire selection is limited. The 15×8 have an amazing tire selection and better performance. Let me know if you have any opinions on which you would like to see on the car. At one point, there was a chrome raceland luggage rack on the trunk of the car but it has since been removed. At this point, i am at the crossroads of the mean track look and a more vintage styling.
I also do want to install a roll bar as it can be an essential safety piece in a Miata. However, the current seat back height puts my head directly hitting a metal bar in an accident. So until I can get a seat that protects my head from the roll bar I will be keeping the car how it is. Speaking of seats, I truly want a set from the lotus Elise as I believe they fit the Miata styling perfectly. Another small mod that would be beneficial is a set of frame rail braces as they can restore some of that loose chasis feel from the years of road use. A true dream for this car would be a k24 engine swap. I am a huge fan of Honda engines and this engine would suit the chasis perfectly. A k24 with bolts ons as it would need to get in the Miata would be able to make around 220 whp naturally aspirated. With the vtec and higher rev limiter the Miata would come alive. This may be a long way out though as handling and maintenance of the car in current state takes priority for me.
All in all, I would buy this car if I was in the same position as when I bought it. I have owned this car for over 2 years now and have only had minor maintenance issues. The best decision I have ever made was deciding to search for a Miata.
